What Is Ecosystem-Based Learning™?
Careers don’t exist in isolation. An airport doesn’t run on pilots alone. A great idea doesn’t become a real product without people who can design, build, test, and launch it.
Yet career exploration often separates professions into neat categories that don’t reflect how the world of work actually operates.
Bold Bear Publishing developed Ecosystem-Based Learning™ (EBL™) to break down those boundaries.
Students explore careers through two types of Career Ecosystems: role-based, connecting careers through shared skills, mindsets, and ways of working, and location-based, connecting the many different professionals who make one workplace function.
Both reveal career connections students might otherwise never discover.
Step Inside an EBL™ Classroom
Forget rows of students clicking through career quizzes. Here’s what happens when students step into a Career Ecosystem!
| What Students Use | What’s Actually Happening |
|---|---|
| Crew Cards | Cards cover the desks! Students annotate career profiles, rank professionals for a challenge, debate who belongs on a team, and pull cards to defend their decisions. One unexpected Crew Member might change the entire plan. |
| Interactive Posters | Sticky notes go up. Questions appear. Someone grabs a marker to add an AHA moment. The Career Ecosystem poster becomes a living dashboard of learning, growing with every discovery, debate, and new question. |
| Career Adventures | Now they’re doing the work! Designing rescue drones. Troubleshooting underwater equipment. Pitching advertising campaigns. Students move, collaborate, make decisions, tackle real-world challenges, and discover that the first solution isn’t always the best one. |
| Adventure Tools | Sketchpads fill up. Storyboards take shape. Ideas get crossed out. Sometimes a plan ends up in a crumpled ball of paper, and it’s back to the drawing board. These tools help students work through their Career Adventures. |
| Community Connections | Students discover where these careers exist in their own communities and how to explore them through their schools. Local industries, Programs of Study, IBCs, courses, clubs, and opportunities turn distant possibilities into real next steps. |
| Badges & Celebrations | Students take on final Crew Challenges, share discoveries, and look back at everything they’ve accomplished. Then they design their own badges, capturing what surprised them, inspired them, or stuck with them most. |
